Barcelona is an hour from a rack railway, ninety minutes from Girona’s stepped cathedral and two from the water at Cadaqués. Nearly all of it runs as one long day with a pickup near Plaça Catalunya and a seat back by dinner.
Barcelona keeps its cheapest good afternoon offshore.
The port is a fifteen-minute walk from the cathedral, which is why an hour on a catamaran costs less here than lunch. Sunset sailings go out with cava, and the Costa Brava coves are one morning north for clear water and a kayak.

Lunch runs long and dinner starts when other cities are asleep, so the useful introduction is somebody walking you between four bars. Market first if you want to understand the ingredients, cellar day if what you are really after is cava.
A tapas walk with a table booked
Four or five bars around El Born and the Gothic lanes, a glass at each and enough small plates to count as dinner. You finish the night knowing which door to go back through.

Every Mediterranean city has a cathedral and a beach. A basilica still being built from a dead man’s models, a park paved in smashed crockery, and a mountain eroded into pillars are harder to arrange.
The Sagrada Família
Gaudí took the job in 1883 and spent his last years living on the site. He worked in plaster models rather than finished drawings, and the fire of 1936 destroyed most of them, so every generation since has argued about what he meant. The nave was only roofed in 2010. Go in during the late afternoon and the west windows throw the whole interior orange.

Trencadís
Gaudí and Josep Maria Jujol surfaced the long terrace bench in smashed tile and factory-reject crockery, set so no join runs straight. It was the cheap way to build a curved surface and it became the thing everyone photographs. The Monumental Zone runs on half-hour slots; the woods above it are free and almost empty.

Montserrat
The massif is conglomerate rock eroded into pillars, which is why it looks sawn by hand, and a Benedictine community has lived inside it since the eleventh century. The Black Madonna draws the queue in the basilica; the boys’ choir sings on most weekdays, early in the afternoon. The rack railway from Monistrol is the pleasant way up.

When it is 33 degrees and the Rambla is three cruise ships deep.
High summer does two things to this city. The middle of the day is too hot to queue in the open, and the cruise terminals put several thousand more people on the same six streets.
